Downy Woodpecker

Picoides pubescens

The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America and found from coast to coast. This species is a good example of "Gloger's Rule," i.e., within a species, more heavily pigmented individuals tend to be found in more humid environments. In Washington State, Downy Woodpeckers on the west side of the Cascades are darker than their counterparts to the drier east.

Bottle Beach State Park

Pacific Northwest Coast

The extensive mudflats of Bottle Beach State Park provide ample habitat for fall shorebirds, including Black-bellied Plovers, Whimbrels, Marbled Godwits, and both species of dowitchers. The best viewing time is one hour before or after high tide, when shorebirds are concentrated closest to shore. Be sure to check out the brambles near the boardwalk for migrating or wintering passerines.
